McGraw-Hill Ryerson Award for Innovation in Education Criteria

Purpose of the Award
 
McGraw-Hill Ryerson supports innovation in education that demonstrates the positive impact of technology on student learning and success.  In our annual Technology and Student Success Study, for example, we survey teachers from across the Canadian Higher Education community about their behaviours and attitudes toward the use and impact of technology on student learning. The McGraw-Hill Ryerson Award for Innovation in Education is designed to further promote and reward innovative teaching practices that incorporate the use of instructional technology leading to enhanced student learning.
 
Presentation of the Award
 
First place winners will receive $500.00 in McGraw-Hill books and an individual plaque. A large plaque will be awarded to the winner(s) for display at their affiliate college for approximately one year.
 
The award winner must be affiliated with an Ontario Community College.

Criteria for the Award
 
The principle criterion for this award is the increase in the effectiveness of student learning brought about by the use of technology. 
 
In ranking the candidates for the award, at least one member of the Selection Committee, usually made up of representatives of the This-Is-IT conference, attends each presentation to evaluate the following criteria:
 
Goals of the Project or Application
 
A clear statement of intended learning outcomes with the use of technology.
A demonstrable connection between enhanced learning and the use of technology.
 
Implementation of the Project or Application
 
A description of the way in which the technology was implemented in the students' learning (e.g., various challenges that were overcome)
 
Impact of Project or Application on Student Learning
 
Indication of how student learning was enhanced by the use of technology.
 
The Use of Technology
 
The extent to which the project involves technology based learning.
 
Broader Impact of the Project or Application
 
Indication that various project objectives were met (i.e., that students learned what was intended and that student learning effectiveness was increased).
Reflection on the potential impact or application of this project could have for other educators and students.

The Alan Blizzard Award
 
Created in 1999 on the occasion of his retirement, this award honours Alan Blizzard for his significant contributions to university teaching and learning and as a founder of the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. (STLHE) The Award recognizes and encourages collaborative work on teaching designed to increase the effectiveness of learning.  The award includes delivery of the Alan Blizzard plenary at the STLHE's annual conference, a citation, and publication of a paper describing the project. 
 
The awards primary sponsor is the Higher Education Division of McGraw- Hill Ryerson as part of a partnership agreement that was signed with the STLHE in 1999.
 
Applications for the Alan Blizzard Award may be submitted by groups of two or more individuals, at least one of whom must be teaching at a Canadian University.  Candidates need not be members of the STLHE.  The Call for Applications is usually posted in the Fall with a deadline in January.  For more information contact Aline Germain Rutherford, Director, Centre for University Teaching at the University of Ottawa:
