McGraw-Hill PRIMIS Publishing

McGraw-Hill's Primis Custom Publishing established a standard for educational publishing when it launched its custom publishing operation in 1990. In response to the needs of changing curricula and the concern over high prices of textbooks for students, McGraw-Hill introduced the concept of making books for individual school needs and adapting books that we already publish to better fit a teacher's course content.

Our organization has proven successful since the early years of custom publishing and we have maintained this organizational model to provide a simplified and effective basis for printing, pricing, promoting, and distributing educational products in print and electronic formats.

McGraw-Hill Traditional (Scan) Custom

Traditional or Scan Custom allows instructors to take an existing McGraw-Hill textbook and alter the content to suit their course. Custom can be printed in black-and-white or colour, and can include additional materials (such as readings or cases) to enhance the resources students use. In addition, original material produced by the instructor can be printed through our Traditional Custom format.

McGraw-Hill Keep in Print Program (KIPP)

Rather than putting "low demand" titles Out of Print, KIPP allows us to continue making these books available. At this time, the program applies only to Canadian texts.

Once a title is designated KIPP, a new ISBN is assigned and the bookstore is notified. In-house, we generate the text's adoption history for the previous twelve months. Appropriate bookstores are contacted to obtain the adopter's name; notification is e-mailed to the instructor, textbook buyer and McGraw-Hill Ryerson sales representative.  As orders are placed, your MHR customer service rep will inform you of KIPP titles; otherwise, orders will be processed as usual.  Books will be printed on demand in exact quantities to fulfill the back orders and shipped directly to the bookstore (packing slip included).  MHR will forward the corresponding invoice separately.

The following key details are important to know:
  • Minimum order quantity: none
  • Turn around time: three to four weeks
  • Pricing: list minus 10%
  • Returns policy: 10%
  • Reproduction: complete, one-colour (no customization)
  • Cover: standard KIPP four-colour cover, title overprinted in one colour
